The way some people talk about it nowadays, you'd think the 911 was the only sports car of note from 1966 to 1989. As a fan of many sports cars that aren't 911s, it's very refreshing to hear something !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I love a good 911. The noise they make is utterly unique, have some serious motorsport mettle and takes true talent to master. However, there are many cars from the era that can also lay claim to the same feats. There are even more if you forgo one or two of those traits, but replace them with ones the 911 lacks.

If you want to hear something negative just look for any top gear episode a 911 is on. Clarkson has never said a nice word about them.

Good point, but Clarkson's 911-bashing seems a little cliche'd. His writing is brilliant, but I much prefer it when he likes a car to when he doesn't.

You had to be a magnificent driver to go fast in the early 911's. Unlike the new ones that can make anyone look fast. But if you want a pure driving experience that'll raise your heartbeat every time you drive it get an early 911. I think driving on the threshold of quick, and oops it is part of their appeal.

I do rather like that about them. There's something brilliant about a car that you have to tame. It's about 75% of the appeal of TVRs, which I love (the rest being the noise).

It's not 911s I dislike per se, but the hero worship that surrounds them.

As the owner of a '73 911 I loved this article. Everything he says is true and it's all part of what makes the car so entertaining. You HAVE to pay attention. Something most cars don't demand of their drivers.

Very good point :) I do like that they are proper drivers cars, and take proper skill to master.
